Every year, New Year's resolutions generate an influx of new gym memberships. One of the biggest challenges these people face is the ability to stay motivated to continue working out. Each week it seems fewer and fewer show-up. Don’t let the decreasing number of people at the gym week after week discourage you from continuing to strive for your goals. Here are some tips to help stay motivated at the gym during the New Year.

A good start to staying motivated is to find someone who can be your “gym buddy” or someone who will hold you accountable for going to the gym. You will also want to find someone who has the same drive and determination as you. Someone who doesn’t have the same enthusiasm will only end up hurting you in the long run. How will they hold you accountable if they can’t even motivate themselves to go to the gym?

When you get to the gym, make sure you already have a plan in place for a workout. Don’t waste time trying to figure out what to do after you get there. Make it a habit to get into a routine and know what you need to do next. If you are finding yourself in a rut when you get to the gym and don’t know where to start or what to work on, try and find some help from a trainer.

Find a goal that you want to reach, whether that is signing up for a competition such as a Tough Mudder run, or attaining a certain body weight. These will help you keep your eyes on the prize throughout your workouts and give you something to work towards. You can also challenge yourself during a workout, like trying to set a new personal record while lifting. However, make sure you aren’t challenging yourself in an unhealthy way, like trying to lift more than you can handle. Know your limits.

Finally, don’t be afraid to take a picture of yourself in the mirror. Be proud of the progress you have made so far! Taking pictures of yourself can give you that confidence boost that you need to keep shooting for your goals and ideal body. Try not to see flaws in what you have not yet accomplished; see the potential of what your hard work can achieve. Keep showing up and working hard - not every road to success is smooth!
